This is an excellent grinder for home use and the one that I use on a daily basis. I guess since I am not using this product everyday, it has not blown up yet :). I was laughing as I read the other reviews. I think a product that you use everyday isn't going to last as long as you might expect it to.

On the other hand, if you use this product for just spices, it will last quite a while. When making curry, I find it much easier to just spin the spices into powder form. When I used to drink more coffee, yes, this did not last as long. I am onto my second one. It is just so convenient and small and fits in the back of the cupboard nicely.

I purchased my Krups coffee grinder in the late 1980s, and it was still working until recently (the only problem was where the cord attached to the grinder. I had to jiggle it around to work the grinder). I intended to suffer through the problem, but my husband threw it away and bought a Braun coffee grinder. The Braun does not grind as finely as the Krups, and its capacity is less as well. I have also tried the Braun grinder that deposits the grounds into a detachable reservoir. Again, the grounds aren't ground finely enough, nor are they uniform in size. The Krups, in my experience, has been the best!

There are two things I take very seriously in this life: one is books, the other is coffee (not surprisingly, the often go together). While the bulk of my reviews are children's books, I felt it necessary to go against type and review this coffee grinder. Most coffee experts as well as everyday, casual drinkers agree that the best tasting coffee is brewed with freshly ground beans. Once beans are ground, they begin to oxidize, much like an opened bottle of wine. Old preground coffee has a tendency to taste bitter, and with the proliferation of inexpensive grinders, more and more people are buying whole bean coffee to grind right before they brew. Of course, finding the RIGHT grinder for the price is the tough part. Grinders exist in every form and size and expense bracket. Quite a lot of round, domed grinders I've used have unsharpened blades on a mount that is too high to really grind beans fine enough for specialty coffee like espresso or Turkish. The Krups has a few advantages over other grinders, namely these: ** The blades are sharp and mounted low in the housing. Maybe other manufactures are saving a few pennies by putting flat tongues of metal in their grinders, but they don't have the edge to pulverize beans like the Krups can. ** The machine has a higher RPM than other machines. This makes it easier to reduce grind times and with additional speed, can reduce whole beans to powder in less than a minute (I've had a Black n' Decker that couldn't grind beans for Turkish coffee if you held the button for half an hour). ** the housing is oval and the lid is flat. Do you like strong coffee?? Use more grounds, then!! The box says that you can grind up to 20 cups of java at a time. I don't know about the sorts of demitasses they must be using to gauge the volume of a "cup", but I do know that this machine can grind up enough beans for a number of very stiff MUGS of coffee. In the disadvantages column, the only one I could site is that the housing cup is slanted down, I'm assuming for decorative purposes. Hence, I'm forever spilling beans out of the lower side. My new secret is to measure the beans out in the LID, first, then turn the whole thing upside down and put the housing into the lid. Since I only use it to grind coffee (and while I drink my fair share, I don't have the thing running nonstop day and night), I can't speak with any aplomb about how sturdy a machine is or how long it lasts. I once dropped one after a year and broke it, but it seemed nowhere near quitting, so I can't vouch for how long it would work under normal, non-butterfingered conditions. My assumption is that anything with such a high RPM rate isn't intended to be kept running for long periods of time-- creates too much heat and friction-- so if you plan to grind coffee night and day, it's probably best that you spend the money on a professional model intended for cafes. The end result is consistent, providing I count off a consistent time (the same could not be said for the previous beast that dwelled in my kitchen). I have had this Krups coffee grinder for over 15 years now. When I first decided to buy coffee beans and grind my own, I knew nothing about it. Just went into a cook store, saw several grinders, and chose Krups based on its looks and simplicity. I have not been disappointed.

I make 2-3 pots of coffee a day. [multiply that times 15 years and that's a lot of use!] It has had the usual wear and beating [oops, I dropped it, etc] and now is yellowed and has brittle teeth around the lid edges from use and abuse, and that's the ONLY reason why I have decided to get another one. The motor is still going strong and the blades still work great.

This is a simple machine to use. Put in the coffee beans, and depending on how strong you want the coffee, grind the beans longer for a finer grind. It took a bit of experimentation at first [which I enjoyed since it was a new thing I was learning] to decide how much and how long depending on how much water I was using, but now it is just automatic to measure, grind, rap the sides, and pour.

I like the safety feature that won't allow you to "accidentally" grind without the lid being seated - the trigger to start it is on the lid. That's the only "button" to push.

Spilling coffee isn't a problem either. After grinding, and before taking off the lid, just rap the sides to help loosen the coffee from the lid and sides. Then take off the lid and dump the coffee into the filter of your machine. The only thing easier would be if the grinder was in your coffeemaker already. However, the more bells and whistles on an appliance, the more possibilities for things to break or go wrong. [My Krups grinder has outlasted at least 3 coffeemakers already. It's worth it to me to keep it separate.]

Since I had such good luck with the first one, naturally I'm getting another. It's still the same number as the one I bought years ago. When something works great, why change it. 15 years... I (OK, we -- my wife loves coffee even more than I) have been using this grinder for more than 7 years now. At least a pot a day, year in and year out. No problems with blowing up, or any of the other problems mentioned. If you're unfortunate enough to get one that doesn't do what the vast majority of reviewers have said it will - grind beans for years and years - I hope you'll assume you got a (rare, it seems) bad copy, and try another one before giving up.

As for the coffee, this little [U.S. currency with Andrew Jackson's portrait] gadget grinds from coarse to espresso, and all you have to do is a "one-mississippi, two-mississippi" until you get it down which mississippi gives you the coffee you want. Yes, blades will heat up the beans, but keeping the beans in the freezer mitigates that, and that's where you really oughta keep 'em anyway, for freshness' sake. As for coffee dust on the sides, I only get that anymore when I come home with a brand new can of Sumatra Lintong from Trader Joe's, and just won't wait for the beans to cool down! Otherwise, cold beans = no caked-on dust. As for getting grounds all over the counter, here's a little trick: when you're done grinding, turn it over (lid still on, please!) and give the whole thing a tap or two on the countertop. Bingo - lid now full of grounds, ready to carry to your coffee maker. (Speaking of... based in no small part on reviews here, we're getting a Braun KF187, and I can't wait to see if it really makes coffee as well as everyone raves. But I digress...)

We also bought a second one of these for spices, and recently even used it to bail us out of a no-confectioner's-sugar bind. Threw in some raw turbinado sugar, crossed fingers, gave it a whirl, and pressed on, MacGyver style...

I purchased this grinder as a replacement for a Salton model. I liked the Salton model because it had an adjustable dial from coarse to fine. This allows more flexibility, if you use different coffee machines. For those of you who use a French press, you will have to carefully grind the beans to keep them coarse. I have had this grinder for about two years now, and find that for the most part it does its job well, but it isn't exceptional. Previous reviews mention a few of the problems I have with this model. I have to upend it to dump the grinds into the lid, and if you aren't fairly careful about pulling it apart, coffee can go everywhere. With the finer grinds that I prefer, it makes a lot of coffee dust, that gets packed in under the blades, sometimes nearly 1/4" thick. I have to wipe this dust out every time, and usually need to use this to make my coffee. This is fine if I am using a paper filter, as it catches this dust, but if I am using my reusable filter, the dust goes through and I end up with sludge at the bottom of my coffee pot.

This grinder isn't very easy to clean. I use a damp paper towel to wipe out the bottom stainless steel portion, but getting close to and under the blade is a pain. I have cut myself doing this. The top portion is simply rinsed out in my sink or occasionally run through the top rack of my dishwasher.

Another problem I am having is that the motor occasionally simply doesn't work. I received my black Krups grinder as a birthday present in 1990. I use it every day, and it is perfect. Over time, tiny chips have broken off the bottom rim of the cover. I agree with previous reviewers that clean up is not this items strong suit. I will probably dedicate a toothbrush to clean it, as the bowel is not removeable, and the directions tell you not to immerse the unit in water. So for spices, I would not recommend this item. (I prefer a mortar and pestle for this, anyway.)

I've used one of these (or a very similar predecessor model) for 13+ years. It works great - produces a pretty consistent grind for a blade grinder. Just hold down the switch longer for a finer grind. I like near-expresso grind, which takes 45-60 seconds. Just tap on the lid, remove it, and dump the ground coffee into the filter. (If you don't tap the lid, you'll get more of a mess on the counter.)

When it dies, I'll probably replace it with a mill grinder, but 13 years of service for <$20 is a pretty good deal in my book.

I have had my grinder for 12 years now. It works the same today as it did new, and I use it about 10 times a week. For the money, it can't be beat. That said, this grinder is not for everybody.

This grinder is perfect for anybody with a coffee maker that uses #4 paper CONE filters (or slightly bigger or smaller). I emphasize PAPER because a permanent filter is not good for this grinder. Like any blade grinder, it will produce some dust. That creeps through the permafilter and into your pot is makes sludge. It sloppies up your coffee. Nothing gets through paper filters though.

It also grinds coffee fine. You really don't have a choice. It is ok for espresso as well if you are not a connoisseur. If you try a coarse grind with this unit, you will be out of luck. If you don't grind long enough, you will leave a few beans whole or in large pieces.

If you need anything other than a fine grind and don't mind using paper filters (I prefer them), then look no further.

This is my first review for a kitchen product, but my trusty Krups Coffee Grinder deserves two thumbs up. Bought an established brand. Got it quickly. First time out it made a lot of noise. Stopped it then started and then it exploded. Blade broken and marked tears in the chamber. I refused (the item cost $20) then they told me to pack it up and send it the service center -- prob 45 minutes minimum if you include driving to the UPS center and then I had to pay the postage - prob $10. I viewed Krups as less than responsive to my problem. So I sent them an email noting that I would be happy if they would send me a new one and I would send the defective item back. I got a stock email back telling me to take it to the service center or send it in. So what did I do? I chucked the Krups and bought another grinder by another manufacturer... The Krups name is usually a slam dunk.. Good. The coffee grinder had plenty of power and looked good.. The assembly was the problem as the metal cutter blade inside hit the side of the grinder. I tried to use the grinder... sparks shot every where and then it froze up. I like this machine so much - it makes short work of beans or grinding spices. The only problem is, unless you're willing to super-clean the chamber, you don't want to be grinding coffee AND spices in the same machine.

So, since I cook a lot and like to start from scratch when possible, I just bought myself a second grinder. One will be exclusively for coffee, and the other will be for spices. Here's the spice grinder part of the review:

- When freshly ground pepper is called for, look no further. Saves wear on your peppermill especially if you need a tablespoon or similar quantity.
- Ground cumin is WAY better in salsas and guacamole, even more so than grinding your own coffee vs pre-ground coffee.
- Larger grinders throw spice powders all over the place and there's more surface to clean. This one, just wash the top and use a damp cloth for the metal chamber on the bottom.
- The speed and sharp blades, and possibly the smaller volume of air inside the chamber all contribute to fresher smelling spices. Larger machines distribute the aroma and air-rinse a lot of it off, I think. The "masala" coming out of the grinder has a much fresher smell than anything I've made in a grinder/chopper or Vita-mix grinder
- To fill or empty, be sure to start upside-down. When emptying, gentle taps will clear the spice off the blades
- Avoid the temptation to try parmesan blocks or bread in this. This machine was not designed for moistness at any level.
- Other ideas: Mustard powder, white peppercorn powder (great in soups), coriander-cumin mix (aromatic in many Indian dishes), nut meals (please roast dry first), fennel seed powder (a friend suggested a heavy pinch of this for an excellent pizza sauce)... the list goes on.

After all my coffee machine researching (they go into the tens of thousands of $$) I ended up with a $15 Mr Coffee from a clearance sale. Then I got this grinder to go with the machine and started buying coffee in bean form. The results were amazing. Once you go fresh ground, you don't go back. Now about the grinder:

- I remain surprised how fast it turns beans into ground coffee
- For finer ground coffee, simply keep it on a few seconds longer
- The chamber size, blade, and RPM take down those beans near-instantly
- No clumps of ground coffee remain in niches, a big plus
- After grinding, flip the machine over and use the lid as the holder from which you scoop the ground coffee out
- Keep a brush around to dust out the stray grinds and keep it clean
- I tried using a grinder attachment on my blender for a while, but nothing beats this in versatility

I've had several of these, given some away and repurposed others. I use a burr grinder for coffee, but because I live on the Big Island of Hawaii, I have access to some really fine coffee; which I often send to friends. Let me repeat that: 22 years.

I bought it when I got married; used in in kitchens from Germany to Louisiana, back and forth across the Atlantic (using a transformer while in Europe); and never experienced a moment's bit of problem. Alas, it died about three months ago, and we began using the Kitchen Aid grinder that I purchased for grinding spices.

I've had this grinder for 10 years and use it constantly. I buy all of my beans whole, so this little grinder has been well used. I purchased this grinder from a Spiegel outlet store in Chicago. A little over 6 months ago we read about the benefits of grinding flaxseed and eating it with cereal, and decided to try it. So we bought the Braun KSM-2 grinder for the purpose, and it worked reasonably well.

However, while staying at a friend's house we tried the same thing with a Krups grinder, and found that
1. it ground the flaxseeds more thoroughly (we think it is because of the oval shape), and
2. it was quieter

We like the Braun's space for winding up the cord, and the Braun seems sturdy enough, so it's not a bad unit. But we bought the Krups and have been using it for a few weeks now, and we prefer it.

Our theory is that the key to the Krups's better grinding is the shape -- seen from above it is an oval with one end chopped off. This shape appears to stop the forward momentum of the flaxseeds (or whatever) so that the blades hit them with more impact. I needed a spice grinder and got this because it was the only one available locally at the time. The box on it said "Coffee and spice grinder," and my father used one of these for coffee for years, so I figured it had to be okay. I finally used up one of my first warehouse purchases: onion flakes. I made onion powder for my homemade burgers in seconds. Wow, what fun. This new one has an oval shape, which sucks as the coffee now gets stuck in the two pointy ends. The motor (or gears) makes a very unpleasing sound which initially had me thinking this was either a DOA or soon to fail. Had it for three months not, it still works, still sound awful. I bought this unit mainly for grinding dry spices. I used to grind them in a mortar and pestle which usually takes about 10-15 minutes with pain and agony, and that didn't even do the job. With this grinder, I load the spices in...boom, boom and boom - literally 3 pushes, I got beautiful spices ground to fine powder in about 7 SECONDS! The amazing thing about this grinder is that it doesn't use sharp blades, it's more like a propeller and I like it because it's safe contact with my fingers when being cleaned.
This is an incredible grinder at an unbeatable low price, I might as well buy another one to grind coffee beans (perhaps in black), I bought this model in white.

This little device is great. What a difference it makes having freshly ground coffee every morning. Even though it's small, this thing is powerful. In fact - it may be a little too powerful.
